ARTLAB J offers summer dance programs

Summer Dance Intensive DetroitARTLAB J, a multi-faceted dance organization based in Detroit, will hold a Summer Intensive this July and a Summer Dance Lab this August.

The ARTLAB J Summer Intensive will meet every day for one week from July 10-16. The program will seek to develop students’ artistry by exploring ways to create movement and conducting exercises to expand the way they think about dance. At the end of the program, dancers will get to share their work in a showcase.

The Summer Intensive will break students into two groups: ages 12-15 and ages 16 and up.

On the other hand, the Summer Dance Lab is a creative laboratory for advanced dancers aged 16 and up. Dancers will have the opportunity to work closely with international artist Breanna O’Mara, a member of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. She graduated from The Juilliard School, where she was recipient of the Joseph W. Polisi Award in 2011. She has worked with artists Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud, Chris Haring, Johannes Wieland, Stijn Celis, Alexander Ekman, Jack Ferver, Larry Keigwin, Colleen Thomas and Ryan McNamara. She has performed work by Pina Bausch, Ohad Naharin, Marie Chouinard, Mark Morris, Paul Taylor and more. As a native of Detroit, she founded the annual outreach program Detroit Arts Immersion, sharing art with a community she loves.

On the first day of the Summer Dance Lab an audition will be held and O’Mara will hand select dancers to use in a creative process that will result in a new work that will be performed at Detroit Dance City Festival.
