Fall into Artists Talks & Performance Labs

Steps on Broadway hosts Artists Talk on Ballet Training for 21st century dancerCalling all NYC-based emerging dance makers, aspiring professionals and dance enthusiasts! The Steps Beyond Foundation has announced its upcoming 2016-17 Performance Labs and Artists Talk Series. As Steps on Broadway’s non-profit arm, the Foundation seeks to connect artists and the community through various events.

For its new season, the Foundation will host a winter and spring Performance Lab on January 15 and May 21, four Artists Talks on November 12, February 11, April 22 and June 24, plus a benefit performance of Mimi Quillin’s one woman show, Call Fosse at the Minskoff, on December 3. All events will be held in the Steps Studio Theater on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

In line with the Foundation’s mission to act as an educational vehicle for both aspiring and professional artists, the Artists Talk Series will once again consist of conversations with internationally renowned industry professionals, book signings, DVD launch parties and film screenings. The series fosters a creative and provocative learning environment, and the opportunity to network with dance, theater and music professionals.

Kicking off the Artists Talk Series on November 12, the Foundation will welcome Juilliard Dance Division Artistic Director Larry Rhodes, master teacher and ZviDance Founder Zvi Gotheiner, dancer and teacher Nina Goldman, and prima ballerina and teacher Ashley Tuttle. The talk is entitled Ballet Training for the 21st Century Dancer. Future artists talks scheduled for February 11, April 22 and June 24 in 2017 will cover aspects of auditioning, teaching, performance and elements of the creative process.

The Performance Lab offers choreographers and emerging dance makers an opportunity to present completed works, works in progress, or experimental concepts in a highly curated studio theater setting. Led by Steps Beyond’s Production Manager Bradley Shelver, each choreographer selected for the lab presents an eight-minute premiere and is granted technical tools and support to cultivate an evening presentation.

The first lab of the season took place October 9 and featured performances by New Jersey Dance Theater Ensemble, Periapsis Music and Dance, FJK Dance and more. The next lab will take place January 15, with a focus on musical theatre, and May 21, for an evening of ballet premieres. Choreographer selections and works to be presented will be announced upon application deadlines.
