January 22 is ‘Island Moving Company Day’

Newport Rhode Island dance companyJanuary 22 has been named “Island Moving Company (IMC) Day” by the city of Newport, Rhode Island. This Sunday afternoon, dancers and supporters of IMC, led by Artistic Director Miki Ohlsen, will gather at the company’s studios on Washington Square in Newport to hear the city’s mayor, Harry Winthrop, make the official proclamation.

This season marks IMC’s 35th year, celebrated with a new look of the company’s studios, with its windows, lobbies and studios now displaying vibrant photos of the IMC dancers by photographer Clint Clemens. “IMC Day” also signifies the company’s purchase of the Newport Academy of Ballet, its affiliate school that has worked in tandem with IMC over the past 35 years but was never before legally joined.

The “IMC Day” festivities will begin at 1 pm with an open studio rehearsal, followed by an open house to view Clemens’ photographs throughout the building. At 3:30 pm, all will gather outside for Mayor Winthrop’s proclamation, with a reception to follow in the company’s studios. All events are free, and interested guests may RSVP at info@islandmovingco.org or by clicking here.
