New TV Dance Competition On The Way

New TV dance competition show by Jennifer Lopez on NBCA new dance competition is coming to NBC! From the network that brought us The Voice and America’s Got Talent comes a new competition show that will feature “the best soloists, duos, trios and groups in all styles of dance.”

The show – World of Dance – is the creation of Executive Producer Jennifer Lopez and her Nuyorican Productions. It’s being marketed as the “biggest, most spectacular and innovative dance competition on television.” The vision is to see top dancers compete to determine who is “the greatest dance act on the planet.”

Top qualifiers in three divisions (Junior, Upper and Teams) will battle each other across 10 episodes and go head to head for the grand prize of $1 million and the title of Best in The World!

Apparently all genres of dance will be represented – with more traditional styles like ballet, tap and ballroom right beside hip-hop, krumping, popping, locking, break dancing, clogging, stomping and more.

In September, Lopez told Variety, “I identify with the struggles, passion, discipline, competition and exhilaration of dance. I am excited that with this show we can skyrocket a dancer’s career and help guide them to success.”

Along with Lopez, other executive producers are Kris Curry, Matthew Everitt, Al Hassas, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, David Gonzalez, Benny Medina and Matilda Zoltowski. No start date has been announced by them or NBC.

According to news outlets, World of Dance will feature the work of various renowned choreographers, such as Napoleon and Tabitha D’umo, best known as “Nappytabs.” Famous performing artists like NE-YO (an accomplished dancer and Grammy Award-winning singer) and Derek Hough (two-time Emmy Award winner) will serve as judges, as announced by Entertainment Weekly.

Meredith Ahr, president of Universal Television Alternative Studio, stated, “Jennifer, Derek and NE-YO are three of the most accomplished dancers of their generation, and their incredible insight from the judges’ table will be both inspiring and wholly constructive to the world-class level of dancers who are competing on the show. We feel so very honored that the three of them are giving back to the dance community in this way.”
