Pointe Shoe Workshop features Stella Abrera

American Ballet Theatre Principal Stella AbreraThe School at Steps, a division of Steps on Broadway, has announced its next annual Pointe Shoe Workshop & Fair, set for Sunday, February 7 at 6:30 pm. A valuable and informative event designed for ballet dancers of all levels, it will feature a panel of experts discussing topics such as pointe shoe fitting and proper maintenance and foot care.

As the evening’s special guest, American Ballet Theatre Principal Stella Abrera will share her story on being fitted and dancing on pointe throughout her career.

Other panelists include: Mary Carpenter, professional pointe shoe fitter; Dr. Andrew Price, associate professor of Orthopedic Surgery; and Ashley Tuttle, master teacher and former principal with American Ballet Theatre.

Yet, perhaps the event’s biggest draw is an opportunity for dancers to try on pointe shoes with fitters from numerous companies, such as Capezio, Chacott by Freed of London, Gaynor Minden and Grishko. Each vendor will also be selling select merchandise.

The Complete Dancer Series is a major component of The Health and Wellness Program at The School at Steps. Consisting of three annual events, the program is designed to broaden the dance education of students by including resources and guidance on issues including injury prevention and recovery, physical therapy, nutrition, emotional wellness and other supplemental services. Events in the past have included College Day, Exploring D-ancestry, Injury Prevention Workshop and Ask the Pros, all designed to help and educate about the dance world, on stage and behind the scenes.

The School at Steps cultivates young dancers, ages 18 months to 18 years, from their first step in a dance studio through their pre-professional training. Students discover their individual artistic voices in a creative environment with the guidance of an internationally recognized faculty. The personal attention the school provides encourages students to mature as dancers, grow as individuals and enrich their passion for the art form. School at Steps graduates go on to dance with professional companies, study at top college dance programs and perform on Broadway.

This Pointe Shoe Workshop & Fair will take place in Loft II and III at Steps on Broadway, located at 2121 Broadway at 74th Street in NYC. Tickets are $15, with group/studio discounts available. For further information, visit stepsnyc.com/the-school-at-steps.
