Steps launches Thursday Spotlight Series

Thursday Spotlight SeriesSteps on Broadway has announced a new Thursday Spotlight Series, your chance to dance with a different special guest artist every Thursday from 8-10 p.m. at the famed NYC dance institution. The instructors include artistic directors, choreographers and teachers from Broadway, the concert stage, television and film. Advanced and advanced intermediate dancers are welcome.

First up on November 8 teaching Contemporary/Theater is Chase Brock, called “prolific” by The New York Times and The New Yorker. He’s the artistic director of the Chase Brock Experience and a Broadway choreographer who’s worked on Be More Chill (Lyceum Theatre), Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark (directed by Julie Taymor) and Sam Gold’s revival of Inge’s Picnic (Roundabout Theatre Company). He’s performed in Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame in San Diego, Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Tokyo, Kyoto, Yokohama and Nagoya. Other career highlights include Bartlett Sher’s production of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette for The Metropolitan Opera, many works of political satire for “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” on HBO, the video game Dance on Broadway for Nintendo Wii and PlayStation Move, and several ballets for New York Theatre Ballet. Brock’s the subject of the Emmy-nominated documentary Chasing Dance.

Next, on November 15, Joshua Bergasse will teach Theater Jazz. Known as the choreographer of Broadway shows like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Gigi and On the Town, part of Bergasse’s rise to fame was on TV with Smash and So You Think You Can Dance. He’s also choreographed Off Broadway productions like Smokey Joe’s Café, Sweet Charity and Cagney.

After Thanksgiving week passes, Peter Chu will teach Contemporary on November 29. Chu’s highly regarded as a former Kidd Pivot dancer and a guest rehearsal director for Nederlands Dans Theater. Now he runs a Las Vegas project-based dance company that showcases his work, which has been previously performed on So You Think You Can Dance and at many ballet, contemporary and jazz companies.

The Thursday Spotlight Series will also welcome Alexandra Damiani (December 6), Cindy Salgado (December 13) and Derek Mitchell (December 20). Other artists, like Camille A. Brown, Andrea Miller, Desmond Richardson and Sonya Tayeh, will likely secure their spots soon.
