The Tony Awards celebrated 70 years Sunday

Tony Awards with Host James CordenOn Sunday night, the 2016 Tony Awards took place at the Beacon Theatre in New York City, celebrating seven decades of honoring the best of Broadway. The night predictably saw the new hit musical Hamilton sweep the various categories (the production took home 11 awards!) and it featured a long list of celebrity appearances.

Host James Corden opened the evening with a tribute to those affected by the Orlando tragedy, which happened less than 24 hours before the awards ceremony aired.

In addition to the group of 2016 Tony Nominees, the evening saw the following celebrities in attendance: Cate Blanchett, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Glenn Close, Josh Groban, Jake Gyllenhaal, Neil Patrick Harris, Sean Hayes, James Earl Jones, Carole King, Lucy Liu, Keri Russell, Meg Ryan and Oprah Winfrey. Singer Barbra Streisand attended the awards for the first time in 46 years!

For dancers, the most coveted award is Best Choreography and this year it went to Andy Blankenbuehler for Hamilton. Other nominees were tapper Savion Glover for Shuffle Along, Or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed; Israeli dancer Hofesh Shechter for Fiddler on the Roof; Broadway veteran Randy Skinner for Dames at Sea; and award-winning Sergio Trujillo for On Your Feet! The Story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan. [Learn more about Blankenbuehler’s latest project, a remake of the Dirty Dancing film, in the June edition.]
