Works & Process Series at the Guggenheim announces Spring 2018 Season

Works & Process at the Guggenheim presents commission by Harriet Jung and Reid BartelmeWorks & Process at the Guggenheim has announced its Spring 2018 Season. Since 1984, the performing-arts series has championed new works and offered audiences unprecedented access to leading creators and performers. Programs explore the creative process through stimulating artist discussions and riveting performance highlights. Each 70-minute program takes place in the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Peter B. Lewis Theater.

Highlights of the Spring 2018 Season include commissions by Ryan McNamara, Jodi Melnick, and Reid Bartelme and Harriet Jung. Melnick’s work One of Sixty-Five Thousand Gestures/NEW BODIES is an encore of her sold-out 2016 commission, which weaved together dance, spoken text and moderated discussion with live music, featuring New York City Ballet dancers Jared Angle, Sara Mearns and Gretchen Smith. McNamara’s work Battleground is also an encore from a no-seats-left premiere in 2016, with a trio of squads fighting for dominance. However, Reid Bartelme and Harriet Jung’s commission is new and will specifically spotlight costume design. It’s being made in collaboration with their favorite clients and dance makers, Lar Lubovitch, Pam Tanowitz, Jack Ferver, Gwen Welliver and Burr Johnson.

Nederlands Dans Theater at the Guggenheim NYCOther dance highlights of the Spring 2018 Season includes previews of programs by American Ballet Theatre, Jacob’s Pillow, Nederlands Dans Theater and Washington Ballet. Excitingly, there will also be a behind-the-scenes event for Rodgers & Hammerstein’s timeless musical Carousel as it returns to Broadway for the first time in over two decades. Prior to the Broadway opening, cast members will perform excerpts of new choreography by New York City Ballet’s Justin Peck. Peck and Director Jack O’Brien will discuss the creative process behind this musical revival.

Another event to note is “Breaking Bread with Balanchine” on Russian Easter with food scholar Meryl Rosofsky. Rosofsky will preview her “culinary biography” of the dance master George Balanchine, showing how his relationship to food illuminates forces—cultural, geographic, political—that shaped him as an artist. Joining her are special guests who danced or dined with Balanchine. Dancers from New York City Ballet will perform excerpts.
