Derek Hough to star in ‘Singin’ in the Rain’

Derek Hough tapped for Singin in the RainAs if we weren’t excited enough that the iconic Singin’ in the Rain was coming to Broadway soon, but now it’s been announced that Dancing with the Stars’ Derek Hough will revive Gene Kelly’s famous role! Producer Harvey Weinstein made the announcement at his annual pre-Oscar dinner recently, where Hough performed a number. [Watch the video below.]

The production, which premiered at Paris’ Théâtre du Châtelet in 2015, sees Robert Carsen direct and Stephen Mear choreograph. It’s apparently eyeing a January 2017 opening date, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Let’s hope it’s sooner!

Hough, the record-making six-time winner of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, is no stranger to the live stage. Just last year he was seen on the New York stage in Radio City Music Hall’s New York Spring Spectacular. He’s also been in Burn the Floor on Broadway, the 2006 West End production of Footloose and ABC’s Nashville.

Sadly, the two-time Emmy Award winner won’t be returning to DWTS this season, reports E Online. (And neither will his sister, Julianne Hough!) But now that he’s putting on his charm for the Singin’ in the Rain role of Don Lockwood we can breathe easier.

Additional information, including further casting, a theater and performance dates, has yet to be announced. Till then, enjoy this teaser of Hough at Weinstein’s recent dinner at the Montage.
