Tony Awards announce 2018 Nominees

Leslie Odom, Jr. and Katharine McPheeOn Tuesday morning, nominations in 26 competitive categories for the American Theatre Wing’s 72nd Annual Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards were announced by Tony and Grammy Award-winner Leslie Odom, Jr. and Katharine McPhee, who is currently starring in the Tony nominated musical Waitress. The Tony Award Nominations ceremony, sponsored by IBM, was held at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. The nominees were selected by an independent committee of 43 theatre professionals appointed by the Tony Awards Administration Committee. (The full list of nominations follows.)

The two musicals Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants led the group of Tony-nominated shows Tuesday morning, gathering 12 nods each.

Plus, the revivals of Angels in America and Carousel, plus new musical The Band’s Visit, received 11 nominations apiece. Just behind them, the revival of My Fair Lady and the new play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child each got 10.

The New York Times reported, “The best new musical race will now pit The Band’s Visit, a critical darling, against three shows with bigger fan bases but weaker reviews: Mean Girls, SpongeBob SquarePants and Frozen.”

Choreographer Christopher Gattelli was nominated twice for Best Choreography for My Fair Lady and SpongeBob SquarePants. Other nominees for Best Choreography are Casey Nicholaw for Mean Girls, Justin Peck for Carousel and Steven Hoggett for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Also noteworthy, various celebrities scored nominations for their work, like Tina Fey, Amy Schumer, Denzel Washington and Andrew Garfield.

In total, 30 Broadway productions were eligible for prizes this year, the lowest number in over 10 years. The 2018 Tony Awards will be June 10 at Radio City Music Hall and will be broadcast on CBS.
