UMich Musical Theatre students Join Cabaret 313 for “Lost in Ann Arbor”

For its first performance of 2022, Cabaret 313 invites the University of Michigan Musical Theatre seniors on Saturday, January 22 for “Lost in Ann Arbor.” The students share their favorite songs, from Broadway hits to radio chart toppers, at the Garden Theatre (3929 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48201). They will perform shows at 6:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. The performances will feature 20 senior class students. Having spent their undergraduate years with intense, conservatory-style training, they showcase their skills through songs they love and songs that inspire them.

“Lost in Ann Arbor: Detroit Edition” will give Detroit audiences the opportunity to see these future stars as they begin their journey toward successful careers.

Jokingly nicknamed the “Michigan Mafia” in Broadway circles, the University of Michigan’s Department of Musical Theatre has an extensive and successful alumni network, creating an undeniable presence in the Broadway world with roles in productions such as “The Lion King” and the spring 2019 revival of “Kiss Me Kate.” Alumni of the Musical Theatre Program have been honored with Tony Awards, Academy Awards and Grammy Awards, among many others.

More than 1,400 students apply yearly for the less than 20 available slots in the program, making it one of the most sought-after and highly selective musical theatre programs in the country. U-M’s School of Theatre and Dance continues to give rise to an extensive list of successful stars, including Darren Criss from the hit TV show “Glee” and Laurel Harris, who starred as Elphaba in the National Tour of “Wicked.”

The performance is under the musical direction of Cynthia Kortman Westphal, an associate professor with the Department of Musical Theatre. An original company member of “The Lion King,” Westphal is also known for conducting the first national tour of “A Christmas Story.”

Tickets are $25 for those 40 and younger, $60 for general seating, and $200 front and center. Free parking is available in the garage on W. Alexandrine Street. To learn more, visit cabaret313.org/performances/lost-in-ann-arbor-u-of-m-musical-theatre-seniors/
