3rd edition of PNB’s Dance Film Festival to receive free screening

Pacific Northwest Ballet, in partnership with Seattle Center, is excited to announce that the third edition of its PNB Dance Film Festival will have a free outdoor screening at the Mural Amphitheatre. The evening of short dance films will screen at dusk (approximately 9:00 pm) on Saturday, August 3. The Mural Amphitheatre is located on the Seattle Center campus, conveniently situated between the Armory and the Pacific Science Center, in the shadow of the Space Needle.

The brainchild of PNB soloist and filmmaker Price Suddarth, the PNB Dance Film Festival was born during the pandemic, from an unprecedented explosion of creativity during COVID lockdowns that stretched the art form in ways never experienced before. Through the Dance Film Festival, PNB seeks to amplify dance films and emerging artists by showcasing their work with PNB’s audiences in Seattle and beyond.

This open-air outdoor experience offers the community unparalleled access to the Festival’s array of beautiful winning films.

An esteemed panel of artistic directors – Tamara Rojo (San Francisco Ballet), Lourdes Lopez (Miami City Ballet), and Hope Muir (National Ballet of Canada) – reviewed submissions and selected the films to be showcased.

Their line-up includes:

As Big as the Sky, Lindsay Clipner (USA), Running time: 3:00; Ballroom Dancing, Loughlan Prior (New Zealand), Running time: 2:41; Dancing with ALS: Breanna’s Story, Ballet Rising (USA), Running time: 5:13; A Place For Us, Leigh-Ann Esty, Ellie Gravitte (USA), Running time: 6:18; 5678 With a Chance of a Hurricane, Gunta Liepina-Miller (Latvia), Running time: 5:35; Dawn Chorus, Henry Wurtz (USA), Running time: 5:29; and Shapes of Aether, Elias Benedikt Choi-Buttinger (Austria), Running time: 6:38.

The Festival line-up will be preceded by two short dance films created by PNB company dancers:

Happening (2021), Leah Terada and Miles Pertl (edited by Noel Pederson), Running time: 6:12, and Unprecedented Serenade (2022), Dylan Wald and Noel Pederson, Running time: 11:30.

Seattle Center’s Mural Amphitheatre is an outdoor gathering space built on a natural hillside. It is the Puget Sound Region’s only mid-sized amphitheatre located in the heart of Seattle Center just minutes from downtown Seattle and serves as a primary venue for concerts during the major summer festivals. The PNB Dance Film Festival is not a part of the Amphitheatre’s Friday night “Movies at the Mural” summer series.
