Avant Chamber Ballet Presents World Premiere of ‘The Princess and The Pauper’
Avant Chamber Ballet announces the company’s world premiere of The Princess and The Pauper at Moody Performance Hall, Dallas on September 21 and 22, 2024. The ballet is a completely new work choreographed by ACB Artistic Director Katie Puder with live music by Cezanne Quartet and projection mapping by Lightware Labs.
“I am incredibly excited to bring this new work to Dallas,” said Artistic Director Katie Puder. “It’s a new way of storytelling for ACB using projections to create an immersive experience to make this modern story even more impactful and personal.”
The projections by Lightware Labs are designed by owners Camron and Courtney Ware who specialize in combining the artistry and engineering of video projection mapping. Puder first worked with the duo for the premiere of Snow White in May 2024. “I was aware of Camron and Courtney’s work around Dallas at museums and other arts performances and for Snow White they created backdrops that were static like traditional painted backdrops would be,” says Puder. “Working with them in the spring was just wonderful and I knew they were the right artists to help bring The Princess and The Pauper to life.”
The story of the ballet is inspired by the original book by Mark Twain titled The Prince and The Pauper about changing places with someone of a different status in society and experiencing what lies outside our personal paradigm. The ballet changes the gender of the main characters and explores seeing the world through someone else’s eyes with modern ballet choreography, new impactful costumes, and live music. The score is created from works by Franz Schubert and Leos Janacek and performed live by Cezanne Quartet.
