ICON School for the Arts expands offerings in Iowa City, Iowa
Located in the heart of downtown Iowa City, ICON School for the Arts is the only performing arts boarding high school of its kind in Iowa and surrounding states. Leslie Nolte and Dr. Beth Brown have assembled a pioneering and experienced group of passionate instructors and educators to facilitate student-driven experiences to foster the growth and development of every student-artist.
ICON School for the Arts offers 3 unique and immersive program tracks to young people ages 14-19 looking to focus on their arts education. All students will take classes in their chosen major along with core arts classes and electives to round out their arts education. Majors include Dance, Theatre Arts, Music (vocal/instrumental), and Design & Production/Visual Arts.
The ICON Program offers an in-person, full-day arts education for young people ages 14-19, and is designed to complement an online academic course of study. ICON students will earn their academic high school degree in partnership with the Iowa City Community School District online program and will attend 20 hours of arts education classes weekly. Students will receive one-on-one instruction and work with students across majors through project-based curriculum. Students may live on-campus or have the option to commute daily. An audition is required for admission into this program.
The ICON Commuter Program offers an in-person, half-day arts education for young people ages 14-19, and is designed to complement an in-person academic program through the student’s home district or homeschool option. Students will spend the mornings attending classes in-person at their high school, commuting to our ICON campus to participate in afternoon arts education. This program will allow students to stay involved in their current ICCSD extracurricular activities and social engagements while also experiencing ICON’s rich and comprehensive arts offerings. An audition is not needed to secure a space in this program.
The ICON Gap Year Program offers an in-person, half-day arts education for post-high school students, ages 18+ . Students may elect to pair ICON’s arts education with college courses of their own choosing or concentrate solely on building their artistic portfolios and preparing for auditions or professional/college applications. Students may live on-campus or have the option to commute daily. An audition is required for admission into this program.
Rooted in the philosophy that not all students have had the opportunity to participate in their art at the same extent or level of intensity as their peers, ICON believes it’s more about realizing the potential in a student rather than the experience the student brings to ICON–all are encouraged to audition! Students are encouraged to register for an audition at the ICON School for the Arts website: iconartsacademy.org.
ICON is an interdisciplinary, intensive arts education high school grounded in project-based learning (PBL) and focused on developing the student holistically with special attention given to their personalized artistic needs and goals.
