New ‘Alma’s Way’ Musical Special Features Choreography by Ebony Williams

Emmy-nominated and celebrated choreographer Ebony Williams is adding a new dance credit to her resume: choreographing for animation.

This summer, Alma’s Way, the hit Emmy-nominated animated series from Fred Rogers Productions, created by Sonia Manzano, is debuting its first-ever musical special, “Alma’s Summertime Musical,” June 9 on PBS KIDS! – and the vibrant half-hour special features lively choreography by Williams.

When Sonny Soto hosts a contest for the kids of the Bronx to write the ultimate “Song of Summer,” Alma and Eddie are excited to enter, but first, they need to figure out what their song should be about. Should it be about Puerto Rico, where they’ve just visited family, or about the Bronx, their everyday home? As they search for inspiration, their journey takes them from the island back to the city, leading them to the realization that they don’t have to choose between the two places they love. Both make them happy, and they belong to both communities. Their song can reflect every part of who they are.

Best known for In the Heights and Sneakerella as well as her work with renowned Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet as the company’s first African American female dancer – and more! – Williams stepped out onto this new stage to mark her first time choreographing for animation. In addition, the musical special includes original songs by Joel Someillan and George Cuttingcane of Jollipop Entertainment (Dora the ExplorerWonder Pets!).

Tune into PBS Kids on June 9 to see Williams’ work come to life in a new way in “Alma’s Summertime Musical”.
