Oklahoma City Ballet presents “Unboxed” featuring three contemporary dance works and visual arts

In collaboration with Oklahoma Contemporary, Oklahoma City Ballet will present Unboxed as an addition to the 2022/23 Season. Unboxed is a celebration of contemporary dance by three world-renowned choreographers at the top of their field: Rena Butler, Larry Keigwin, and Ryan Jolicoeur-Nye. Each choreographer will present a short work, and visual artist Yatika Starr Fields will design costume pieces in collaboration with Rena Butler.

World-premiere intellectual property will be created in Oklahoma with some of the brightest and most-talented creative minds of our time. Unboxed will fill a need in the region to help pioneer dance on the global stage, creating work that can be presented to the local community and can be remounted in other public spaces around the country.

On Saturday, June 24, there will be a special Family Matinee, including a Movement Class FREE for all attendees led by Alfonso Pulé of The Groovemeant Community.

Since its founding in 1972, Oklahoma City Ballet has been the city’s professional ballet company, boasting talented dancers from around the world. As the resident dance company of the Civic Center Music Hall, the company produces four main-stage productions per season in Oklahoma City in addition to touring across Oklahoma and surrounding states. Oklahoma City Ballet also offers dance classes for all ages and skill levels through The Oklahoma City Ballet Yvonne Chouteau School as well as multiple community engagement programs to encourage artistry and athleticism in students across the state.

Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center ignites creativity through exhibitions, performances and public programming. They focus on living artists, the art of now and the art of what’s next. They are committed to providing accessible, inclusive arts experiences for everyone by hosting free exhibitions, events and performances year-round and by offering low-cost, high-quality arts classes and camps for youth and adults.

Unboxed was created to increase accessibility to new ballet audiences. For the first time ever, Oklahoma City Ballet and Oklahoma Contemporary will make ticket prices “pay what you can,” removing the financial burden from those who want to experience a dance performance.

Unboxed will be at the Oklahoma Contemporary’s Te Ata Theater June 23-25. Performances will be at 2 pm on June 23 & 25, and at 7:30 pm on June 23 & 24. Click here to purchase tickets and learn more.
