Dance Complex Announces Trio of Spring Dance Performances

The Dance Complex – New England’s largest hub for dance performance, instruction and community-building – announces its spring 2025 The DC Presents season with three performances from widely divergent women dancemakers inspired by global artistry, stories and music.

New York-based Jenna Riegel channels Soviet-era design and photography in her work Varvara, which honors the legacy of the Russian Constructivist artists Varvara Stepanova on March 1 and 2. Chicago’s Nejla Yatkin winds an ancient symbol of healing into Middle Eastern dance and music, inspired by English, ASL and European text for her immersive performance Ouroboros on March 22 and 23. Vermont choreographer Christal Brown’s What We Ask of the Flesh draws from poet Remica Bingham-Risher’s writings and her own caregiving journey with Alzheimer’s and dementia on April 25 and 26.

“With these extraordinary works at The Dance Complex this season, we find three unique perspectives on art, identity, and the human experience,” says Executive Artistic Director Peter DiMuro. “Jenna’s work captures an interplay between mechanization and chaotic human expression, and delivers a visually and intellectually compelling performance. Nejla immerses us in the cyclical nature of time and memory through a rich tapestry of dance, language, and cultural rituals, celebrating feminine wisdom and shared humanity. Christal’s piece delves into memory, legacy and transformation, and blends performative and interactive elements for a deeply resonant exploration of spirit and identity. These works highlight the diversity of artistic inspiration and thematic depth that make dance such a powerful medium for storytelling and connection. It is an honor to present them at The Dance Complex.”
