Dance/NYC Announces Recipients of First Round Coronavirus Dance Relief Fund for Dance Making Organizations

The dance service organization Dance/NYC has announced the 69 recipients of the first iteration of its Coronavirus Dance Relief Fund for Dance Making Organizations, and the second round of its Coronavirus Dance Relief Fund for Dance Making Organizations, made possible by the generous support of The New York Community Trust. The new round of applications opens on Friday, June 12, 2020 and will close on Friday, July 3, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. ET. Dance making organizations with annual expense budgets between $10,000 and $250,000 are invited to apply.

The Soraya Joins Martha Graham Dance Company and Wild Up for the World Premiere of a Digital Dance Creation

The ongoing collaboration by three major arts organizations, Martha Graham Dance Company, the Los Angeles-based Wild Up music collective, and The Soraya, will continue June 19 with the premiere of a digital dance inspired by archival remnants of Martha Graham’s Immediate Tragedy, a solo she created in 1937 in response to the Spanish Civil War. Graham created the solo in collaboration with composer Henry Cowell, but it was never filmed and has been considered lost for decades. Drawing on the common experience of today’s immediate tragedy – the global pandemic, the 22 artists creating the project are collaborating from locations across the U.S. and Europe using a variety of technologies to coordinate movement, music, and digital design.

Deeply Rooted Dance Theater is adapting its Summer Dance Intensive (SDI) to a virtual format in 2020 to enable the program to continue while keeping students, staff, and community members safe and in compliance with the phases of reopening the city of Chicago and state of Illinois. The Youth Division session takes place July 6–17; the Pre-Professional Division session takes place July 20–31; and Mature H.O.T. Women takes place July 6–31.

Red Clay Dance Company helps the fight

Red Clay Dance Company (RCDC), a nonprofit dance company that creates and performs a diverse repertoire of Afro-contemporary dance, is stepping up in the fight against the threat of COVID-19 in its community with the Dance Pamoja Challenge, a 12-month project beginning June 1 that focuses on controlling blood pressure, building resilience, and preventing death from COVID-19 among African-American families living on Chicago’s South Side.

Highland Park turns to humor for June's First Fridays

During the pandemic, the Highland Park Arts and Cultural Council continues its tradition of celebrating the first Friday of each month with its neighbors — albeit socially distanced —  on June 5 from 6-7:30 p.m. With a focus on artistic activities centered around the community, including local artists and businesses, First Fridays Highland Park events range from poetry slams to dance lessons to karaoke nights to this event featuring local comedians, who have made national names for themselves: John "J. Bell" Bell, Mike Bonner and Coco the Comedian. Partnering with WHPR TV 33, this event will be broadcast across six radio and digital platforms.

Virtual Commission Series

On June 7 at 7:30pm EDT, Works & Process at the Guggenheim will present the premiere of Storm as part of the Works & Process Artists (WPA) Virtual Commission Series. A direct response to the pandemic, the initiative was launched to financially support artists and nurture their creative process during these challenging times by granting over $150,000 in commissioning funds to artists who have been featured at Works & Process. Artists from a wide variety of genres have been commissioned to create new works, less than 5 minutes long, while social distancing, that premiere on FacebookInstagram and YouTube (@worksandprocess).

The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company announces a first-time, long-distance collaboration with Dancing Wheels, the first professional dance company led by wheelchair dance master, Mary Verdi Fletcher, to serve students with multiple disabilities at the A Harry Moore Laboratory School. The A Harry Moore School is one of a few public schools in New Jersey serving mostly low-income students with multiple disabilities that are difficult to be placed in a normal school environment.
