Louisville Ballet names new artistic director

Robert Curran joins Louisville Ballet as Artistic DirectorThe Louisville Ballet Board of Directors has announced the appointment of Robert Curran as Artistic Director for the organization. He will begin his duties with the season-opening production of Giselle. Curran danced with The Australian Ballet for 16 years and later co-founded the project-based dance company Jack Productions and served as rehearsal director of Bangarra Dance Theatre.

NYCB's Fall Gala features high fashion

New York City Ballet’s annual Fall GalaFashion designers Thom Browne, Sarah Burton, Valentino Garavani, Carolina Herrera and Mary Katrantzou will help New York City Ballet kick off its new 2014-15 season on Tuesday, September 23 by pairing up with choreographers Troy Schumacher, Liam Scarlett, Christopher Wheeldon, Peter Martins and Justin Peck to create costumes for the Opening Night Fall Gala. The gala evening will take place at the company’s home at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in the David H. Koch Theater.

Houston Ballet launches 2014-15 season

The Hamburg Ballet in John Neumeier's A Midsummer Night's DreamHouston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch recently announced the company’s 2014-15 season lineup. In addition to four new works entering the company’s repertoire – including a world premiere by Mark Morris – Houston Ballet will celebrate the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth by performing three ballets based on his most enduring tales. The first ballet is the company premiere of John Neumeier’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, set to open the season next month.

New contemporary dance film UntappedA film production company in the greater Atlanta area is producing a contemporary dance film, titled Untapped, set to begin production in early 2015. An open casting call via video submission starts on August 15. The open casting call will seek to fill several roles ranging in age, gender and appearance. Whelan joins Ballet Academy East faculty

Principal Dancer Wendy WhelanAfter 30 years of dancing with New York City Ballet, Principal Dancer Wendy Whelan announced in April that her final performance with the company will be on October 18. As one of many exciting opportunities she has received since her announcement, she has been invited to join the Pre-Professional Division Faculty at Ballet Academy East in New York. Her tenure will begin with Ballet Academy East's Summer Intensive from August 18-29 and will continue through the school year.

On Wednesday, July 16, the 36 nominees for the 2013-14 season were announced at a press conference by members of The Bessies Selection Committee. The 2014 awards ceremony will take place on Monday, October 20 at the legendary Apollo Theater in NYC. One 2014 award was also presented at the press conference – the fourth annual Outstanding Emerging Choreographer Award.

National Dance Day 2014In a ground-breaking alliance bringing together three of the nation's leading cultural organizations, National Dance Day events will kick off in Los Angeles, New York and Washington D.C. on Saturday, July 26 to encourage Americans of all ages to incorporate dance into their lives. In addition to these events, dancers can get involved in National Dance Day by hosting their own local flash mobs or events. The Dizzy Feet Foundation has created instructional video routines that the public is invited to learn and mark with their own signature style.
