PNB Principal Kaori Nakamura to retire

Kaori Nakamura as GiselleAfter a 17-year career with the company, Pacific Northwest Ballet Principal Dancer Kaori Nakamura will retire from performing at the end of PNB’s 2013-14 season. Nakamura joined PNB as a soloist in 1997 and was promoted to principal in 1998. She will perform the lead role in Giselle from May 30–June 8 and then dance in PNB’s annual Season Encore Performance on June 8. Following her retirement, Nakamura will join the faculty of PNB School.

Added to the mix will be two works new to Birmingham audiences: a re-creation of the ground-breaking Miracle in the Gorbals, and a new one-act ballet from Director David Bintley.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago's Adaptive Youth ProgramsHubbard Street Dance Chicago has announced two new Adaptive Dance Programs: The Autism Project, for youth with autism spectrum disorder in grades 1–6; and Physically Integrated Dance, for neurotypical youth ages 8–16 with physical disabilities. Five-week pilot sessions for both programs are scheduled to begin in June 2014, joining Hubbard Street’s continuing Parkinson’s Project.

(Rhapsody En Dance)The City University of New York has launched the CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI), a residency program providing rehearsal and performance space to NYC choreographers and dance companies. The new program, which brings a host of benefits to both CUNY campuses and local dance artists, is supported by a lead $200,000 two-year grant plus additional two-year funding. NYC choreographers may now apply for a residency.
