Feel the Beat with Diane Gudat

As part of their Dance Teacher Training Courses, Rhee Gold Company is offering a two week “Foundations of Music Theory” course with Diane Gudat. In this two-week course, Diane Gudat will take this sometimes dry and intimidating subject and inject it with fun and humor, so that you will be comfortable including it in your studio’s curriculum. It is designed to equip teachers with information for beginners through advanced students, in all subjects, with games and exercises for the classroom.

This knowledge of music theory will aid students with musicality, synchronicity, and developing stronger attachment to the rhythms they are hearing. Time will be spent on aiding the teacher in layering choreography, clearly expressing their rhythmic ideas and counting with confidence.

Lesson One is titled “Feel the Beat” and will take place on September 15 at 11 am EST. This session will explore easy and fun ways to teach symbol recognition for beginner and intermediate students. It will include counting and clapping games and rhythm exercises. Time will be dedicated to working with quarter, half and whole notes to build confidence with counting and constructing rhythms.

The Second Lesson is titled “You’ve Got Rhythm” and will take place on September 22 at 11 am EST. Working upon the fundamentals of session 1, we will continue working with more complex rhythm patterns and counting for intermediate and more advanced students. You will learn how to recognize time signatures and how a basic knowledge of music theory can improve your choreography.

Both lessons can be enjoyed live or on-demand. For those who attend live, you will have the opportunity to take part in a 15-minute Q & A following each session! There will also be links to resources that will allow you to bring fresh musical theater curriculum into your classes, as well as handouts for each lesson!
