Injury Prevention Workshop with Sara Mearns

The School at Steps Complete Dancer Series Injury Prevention WorkshopOn Sunday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m., The School at Steps closes its 2013-2014 Complete Dancer Series with an Injury Prevention Workshop, covering ways to prevent and recover from dance injuries.

 

The panel consists of Leigh Heflin from The Harkness Center for Dance Injuries; Robin Powell, Pilates instructor and Steps faculty member; Dr. Andrew Price, Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery from the New York University Hospital/Hospital for Joint Disease; and special guest Sara Mearns, Principal Dancer at New York City Ballet.

 

Dancers, teachers and parents will gain valuable information on such topics as the importance of a strong core, the role of physical therapy in a dancer’s recovery and the effects that adolescent growth and dance training have on one another. Mearns will offer a firsthand account of her recovery process.

 

The Injury Prevention Workshop is presented as part of The Complete Dancer Series, a major component of The Health and Wellness Program at The School at Steps, a division of Steps on Broadway. Consisting of three annual events, the program is designed to broaden the dance education of students by including resources and guidance on issues including pointe shoe fitting and foot care, physical therapy, nutrition, emotional wellness and other supplemental services.
