Music Workshop for Choreographers in NYC

Periapsis Music and Dance Artistic DirectorGelsey Kirkland Arts Center, located in DUMBO Brooklyn, will host a Music Workshop for Choreographers on July 12-14 from 6-9 pm each evening. Led by Periapsis Music and Dance Artistic Director Jonathan Howard Katz, the workshop will help choreographers and dancers develop their listening skills and teach them to deepen their engagement with music.

This workshop is intended “not to turn you into musicians or make you proficient in music theory, but rather to open you up to hearing more of what makes up a piece of music and what it’s bringing to the table,” states the event description.

Dr. Katz and participants will discuss various topics, like working with musicians and recordings, and interpreting multiple elements of music. On the third day, they’ll look at some of the technical, logistical and even legal issues that come up when dealing with composers, musicians and music in general.

Dr. Katz holds degrees in piano performance from Indiana University, New England Conservatory and Northwestern University. He has been commissioned by various artists and groups to compose music, has been requested for numerous artistic collaborations, has been granted major prizes and awards, and regularly presents at festivals, performance series and concerts. As a scholar, his work with new piano music promises to be a key contribution to contemporary research.

The workshop with him costs $15 per day or $40 for all three days. GK Arts Center is located at 29 Jay Street in Brooklyn. To register, visit periapsismusicanddance.org/calendar.
