New Choreographers and Dancers Competition

International Contemporary Choreographers and Dancers CompetitionValentina Kozlova, the renowned Soviet-born ballerina who hosts an international ballet competition in her name annually, has announced the first edition of her new International Contemporary Choreographers and Dancers Competition, to be held April 28 and 29, 2014, at Symphony Space in New York City.

Dancers and choreographers interested in competing may submit two solos, not more than two and a half minutes in length each, or a duet, not to exceed three and a half minutes. For group dances of three or more, the time limit is four and a half minutes. Dancers may perform either barefoot or in soft shoes and, unlike Kozlova’s ballet competition, there is no age restriction.

The deadline to apply is March 30, 2014, and detailed instructions may be viewed on the competition website. Kozlova, who has produced three very successful ballet competitions, now goes modern with a competition for contemporary dancers and choreographers.

Competition judges so far include: Andris Liepa, honorary president; representatives of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; staff hailing from the Dance Department of The Juilliard School; and artists from Peridance and The Washington Ballet.
