NYC Ballet Dancers Paint The Town Red

On Tuesday, May 31 after the curtain came down at New York City Ballet’s evening performance, a crew of dancers took to the streets, dancing down city sidewalks and distributing hundreds of red pointe shoes across the city in a grass roots effort to rally and raise awareness for this year’s Dancers’ Choice performance on Sunday, June 12, a one-time-only program produced entirely by NYCB’s dancers. Tuesday night’s activities also marked the release of the video “Make Your Move,” produced by and starring NYCB dancers.

This year’s Dancers’ Choice program, overseen by NYCB dancers Adrian Danchig-Waring and Amanda Hankes, will feature George Balanchine’s iconic works Apollo and Rubies, as well as a series of selections from George Balanchine’s Agon, Angelin Preljocaj’s La Stravaganza, and the only performance this season of Christopher Wheeldon’s Liturgy. A highlight of the evening will be breakout performances across the board with dancers making exciting debuts in nearly every role.

A performance created by and for the dancers, all proceeds from the evening support NYCB’s Dancers’ Emergency Fund, which was initiated in 1980 by Jerome Robbins to assist individual dancers who have had personal emergencies or unexpected hardships.
