Studio owners gather to study business
This February, dance studio owners from around the country, some even coming from international locations, will congregate in Orlando, Florida. But these business owners aren’t fleeing the snow or anxious to see Mickey.
This group is coming together to share information, network and most of all, to get fresh ideas about how to grow their businesses courtesy of Misty Lown, owner of More Than Just Great Dancing in Onalaska, WI. The event, called Studio Owner University™, is the signature live event of More Than Just Great Dancing, which is a licensed affiliation of 115 dance studios worldwide. The event is open to both members and non-members.
“Entrepreneurship is what built the dance industry,” said Misty Lown, “and while it’s true that this is a challenging economy, it is still very possible to grow a successful business.”
And Lown is more than willing to share the methods to her success with other business owners.
With 17 years of studio ownership under her belt, 19 performing groups and five children of her own, Lown has quite a bit to share about growing a successful business and giving back to the community while raising a family—topics which are in great demand for today’s studio owner.
The Orlando summit is being held February 6-8 at the Orlando Omni Championsgate Hotel. There will be three days of networking, classes in marketing and management by Lown, as well as guest appearances by preferred vendors Curtain Call Costumes, Dance Informa Magazine, Tututix, Stage Door Connections and Studio Director Software. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with More Than Just Great Dancing’s Graphic Artist Meg McCluskey to get assistance with developing or updating their brand.
“Being able to have the service of a talented graphic artist can be very important. Good graphic art is one way to promote brand recognition,” said Lown, “and many small businesses don’t have access to someone like Meg. It’s all part and parcel of being a part of the More Than Just Great Dancing affiliation.”
Other Studio Owner University™ events have been held in New York and San Diego, and more are planned as Lown has a message to share. A Studio Owners University™ event will be held in Las Vegas on September 23-25 at the Monte Carlo. Lown’s first international event will be held in Aruba in February 2016.
“Everything we do is literally ‘more than just great dancing,’” Lown said. “Our program is about active, healthy kids with good body images. It’s community involvement. It’s sharing ideas and information about how to succeed in a rapidly changing economy. Most of all, it’s about paying it forward.”
