Young Dancemakers Company free concerts around NYC

Young Dancemakers CompanyAn ensemble of 19 talented, ethnically diverse high school dancer/choreographers, under the expert eye of director/founder Alice Teirstein, will participate in the 17th year of Young Dancemakers Company, performing their original works in eight free performances in NYC, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, July 26-August 4th.    In addition to their own choreographies – with a few amazingly sophisticated works by the youngsters –  the dancers learn excerpts from dances by established choreographers, this year Sean Curran and Robert Battle.

Sean Curran created a new work on the company called  “Urban Shuffle,” an upbeat group dance set to music by Lenny Pickett. Marlena Wolfe  is working with the teens, setting an excerpt from Robert Battle’s “Ella,” danced to songs sung by Ella Fitzgerald.   Wolfe, a former dancer with Battle’s group, will guest with the company, dancing one of the choreographer’s take-no-prisoners solos.
