English National Ballet Philharmonic release music from Raymonda
English National Ballet have released an album of sumptuous music from the ballet Raymonda on Spotify and other streaming platforms for music lovers to enjoy.
Raymonda features a glorious and sensuous score by Alexander Glazunov, and is a rarely seen ballet in the UK. The album, which is available now on Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming platforms, is a recording of the English National Ballet Philharmonic performing the original 19th century score by Glazunov and includes 11 tracks in total.
Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of English National Ballet, said, “It is difficult to describe Glazunov’s music for this ballet because it is genuinely exquisite and overwhelming. There are some pieces that are so absolutely beautiful, full of color and folklore and there are also extraordinary grand waltzes, so it is a very moving and evocative score.”
Gavin Sutherland, English National Ballet’s Music Director, added, “It is the most ravishing piece of music. It is scintillating, characterful, dramatic and gloriously romantic.”
This latest release from English National Ballet Philharmonic follows from previous releases of recordings of Dido’s Lament as featured in Laid in Earth by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and music from the swashbuckling pirate ballet Le Corsaire.
English National Ballet will premiere a new adapted version of the ballet Raymonda, reworked by Tamara Rojo, on stage at the London Coliseum in January (13-23). This version takes inspiration from the ground-breaking spirit of Florence Nightingale and the women who supported the war effort in Crimea and keeps the best of the 19th-century original but with an adapted score and new choreography to fit with the dramatic new story.
The original Raymonda is very rarely performed in the UK, where no dance company performs it in its entirety. This highly-anticipated version marks Tamara Rojo’s debut in directing and choreographing, building on her illustrious career as dancer and artistic director. Starring a huge cast of dancers with lavish sets and costumes and live music performed by the English National Ballet Philharmonic, it is the must have ticket this Winter.
