Nvitational Dance Festival

El Portal Theatre and Artistic Director Dee Caspary present the first annual Nvitational Dance Festival from July 29 through August 14 in Los Angeles.  The Nvitational will be a series of collaborative events featuring dance from America’s best, boldest, edgiest, and fiercest choreographers including the festival’s Artistic Director, Dee Caspary and notables Marty Kudelka, Mandy Moore, Kitty McNamee, Ryan Heffington, Bubba Carr, Peter Chu, Tabitha and Napoleon, Tovaris Wilson, Kevin Maher,  Dana Wilson, Adam Parson, and many more!

Dance 4 Kids at The Taylor School

Rent Revival

Returning to NYC after its groundbreaking 12-year Broadway run, RENT, set in NYC's East Village, is a modern take on the classic Puccini opera, La Boheme. It tells the unforgettable story of a group of young artists learning to survive, falling in love,  finding their voices and living for today.  The Off-Broadway revival will begin previews July 14 at New World Stages, 340 West 50th Street, with opening night set for August 11.

Global Water Dances

Dancing for Safe Water Everywhere - Global Water Dances is a world event planned for this Saturday, June 25. A 24 hour series of dances around the globe will be danced, centered around water issues. Beginning in the Western Pacific Rim, and encircling the globe, rolling westward through the time zones, the series of dances will also be broadcast online.  These dances will use dance and music to blend local water issues with the global struggle to ensure safe water for all human beings.

Top 20 Treat Tonight

Tonight the competition continues for America’s Top 20 on So You Think You Can Dance. After last week’s surprising non-elimination, two couples will leave the show this week. Tonight they will churn up the dance floor to try and win our votes. The two-hour live performance show starts at 8pm ET on FOX, followed by the elimination special tomorrow, featuring performances by electro-hip-hop recording duo LMFAO and hip-hop dance crew Quest Crew.

11,500 Save Nederlands Dans Theater

At the beginning of May, Nederlands Dans Theater contacted dance professionals across the world with the petition ‘Keep Nederlands Dans Theater Alive’ after the company was threatened to have its government subsidy reduced by 40 to 50% and to be demoted to the status of a ‘regional’ company. More than 11,500 people in the Netherlands and abroad signed the petition and last Friday, June 10, it was announced that NDT will remain in the long-term national subsidy structure, as it is now, and will only receive a generic reduction in subsidy of approximately 5%. NDT is extremely pleased with the overwhelming support it received. The company now retains its international status and can continue to fulfill its important role in the dance industry.

Judges Keep All Top 20 Finalists on So You Think You Can Dance

In an unprecedented move, judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy and guest judge Megan Mullally kept all Top 20 finalists on So You Think You Can Dance safe from elimination last night. After America’s vote was revealed, Jordan Casanova and Tadd Gadduang; Clarice Ordaz and Jess LeProtto; and Miranda Maleski and Robert Taylor Jr. were the three couples who received the fewest votes. Unable to compete in Wednesday night’s performance show, Mitchell Kelly was also placed in the bottom. The judges asked the finalists to perform solo routines, and after deliberating, chose not to eliminate anyone. As a result, two couples – four dancers – will be sent home next week.

New Staff for Manhattan Youth Ballet

Manhattan Youth Ballet (MYB) has announced additions to its staff beginning in the fall:  New York City Ballet Principal Dancer Daniel Ulbricht as Artistic Advisor, working in collaboration with the school's Founder and Executive Artistic Director Rose Caiola; Brian Reeder as Choreographer-in-Residence; and Karen Lacy as a member of the faculty.  Natalia Boesch, Erin Fogarty, Marina Stavitskaya, and Deborah Wingert remain as faculty members, among others.

Baby Boy for Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied

Oscar winner Natalie Portman gave birth to a baby boy on Tuesday.  The acclaimed actress and her fiancé, dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied of New York City Ballet, are thrilled. Portman and Millepied met on the set of ballet thriller “Black Swan”. Portman has not yet revealed the name of the child, but all we want to know is will he be a dancer or an actor, or both? Either way baby Millepied is sure to be a star.

New Glee Reality Show

The loveable Glee kids of McKinley High are approaching senior year, so the show’s producers have been forced to look for a new cast. To aid their search, the show’s creator Ryan Murphy has created a new reality television show about the hunt for new song and dance talent, which premiered on Oxygen on Sunday. Chosen from 40,000 applicants, 12 aspiring stars sing, dance and do everything they can to earn the right to be written into the script of Glee.

For the first time ever, So You Think You Can Dance will allow viewers to vote for their favorite contestants online at www.fox.com/dance. Online voting begins immediately after the first performance show airing Wednesday, June 15 (8:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX. In addition to online voting, fans will continue to be able to vote via toll-free phone lines and text-messaging during the voting window (standard text-messaging rates may apply).

Broadway's Tony Awards 2011

Last night the 65th annual Tony Awards were held at the Beacon Theatre, New York City. The American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards celebrate excellence in the theatre.  “The Book of Mormon” took top honors winning the Tony Award for best musical as well as eight others.  British import “War Horse” won best new play of the 2010-11 season.  Norbert Leo Butz was named best actor in a musical for his performance in “Catch Me if You Can” and Sutton Foster received her second Tony for best actress in a musical, for her portrayal of Reno Sweeney in the revival of “Anything Goes.”

Dance iPhone App

Modern dance now has a new performance space, the iPhone, with a free app called Dances created by choreographer and videographer Richard Daniels, an artist in residence at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, New York. The app features six short dance films with biographical information about each performer. This is the first installment in a planned series meant to bring the world of dance to a digital audience, with an update for the app, featuring seven new performances, currently in production.

Alonzo King Commissioned by Ballet Béjart

Alonzo King has created a piece entitled Figures of Thought for the Ballet Béjart. The piece utilizes the incredible athleticism and artistry of twenty Ballet Béjart dancers, with costumes by LINES Ballet's Creative Director Robert Rosenwasser and lighting design by Axel Morgenthaler. Figures of Thought will premiere in eight performances, opening June 11 at Theatre Beaulieu in Lausanne, Switzerland. The commission was agreed upon two years ago, after Maurice Béjart fell in love with Alonzo's Following the Subtle Current Upstream, which at the time was being performed by Alvin Ailey ADT

Birmingham Ballet Benefit for Ovarian Cancer

Birmingham Ballet will be hosting a benefit on Saturday June 11 at Pale Eddie’s Pour House, from 7-9 pm.  This event will be held to celebrate the premiere of the new Repertory Company as well as the partnership developed with the Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation. Admission is a $5 dollar donation to the Foundation. It will be a night to say thanks to sponsors, donors and the Birmingham Ballet family.

iaMmE Win America's Best Dance Crew

Last night Season 6 of America's Best Dance Crew came to a close with the announcement of the winning Crew. After 10 amazing episodes the two teams left to battle it out were the young all male 'Iconic Boys' and the unique and creative 'iaMmE'. After 50 million votes were counted iaMmE was crowned America's Best Dance Crew, taking home the $100,000 prize.

NYC Ballet Dancers Paint The Town Red

On Tuesday, May 31 after the curtain came down at New York City Ballet’s evening performance, a crew of dancers took to the streets, dancing down city sidewalks and distributing hundreds of red pointe shoes across the city in a grass roots effort to rally and raise awareness for this year’s Dancers’ Choice performance on Sunday, June 12, a one-time-only program produced entirely by NYCB’s dancers. Tuesday night's activities also marked the release of the video "Make Your Move," produced by and starring NYCB dancers.

Hines wins Dancing with The Stars

Season 12 is a wrap and what a season it was! Before the dazzling finale, we were treated to many weeks of shoes flying, stars crying, pros stumbling and an ever-changing leaderboard. The hits kept coming (as did the misses) as the stars rehearsed hard and danced harder in pursuit of the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy. Chelsea Kane, Hines Ward and Kirstie Alley were the final three celebrity dancers. Hines seemed to do well each and every week as the audience fell in love with his infectious smile, and he was able to beat Kirstie Allie despite her amazing transformation in body and dance technique. Footballer Hines Ward and Kym Johnson danced away with the Mirror Ball Trophy as the champs of Season 12.

Award for Foreign Born Dancers

The Vilcek Foundation has selected dance as the award category for its 2012 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in the Arts. For the first time, a dance artist will receive the $25,000 annual award. Since 2009, the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in the Arts has been calling attention to the key role young immigrants play in the continued vibrancy of culture in the United States. Dancers, choreographers, artistic directors, and former dancers who now teach are invited to apply. The winner and finalists will be notified in November 2011 and honored at an awards ceremony in New York City in April 2012.

Atlanta Ballet presents Ignition
Keeping with Atlanta Ballet’s tradition of premiering edgy new works, an extraordinary crew of young, up-and-coming choreographers will bring a new dance voice to Atlanta in the company’s season finale, Ignition: New Choreographic Voices, this weekend May 13 through 15. Jaquel Knight In Action With Nicole Scherzinger

JaQuel Knight, Award-Winning Celebrity Choreographer, Artistic Director and mastermind behind Beyoncéʼs “Single Ladies” phenomenon, has just choreographed the music video to Nicole Scherzingerʼs first US single “Right There” featuring 50 Cent, and is currently working on her upcoming American Idol performance airing May 19. Performers Announced for Dancin’ Downtown

Dancin’ Downtown at the Joyce has announced it’s 2011 entry selections, including 17 dance companies and studios from across the nation. A performance and choreography competition produced by and benefiting Dancers Responding to AIDS, Dancin’ Downtown provides dance students the opportunity to be seen by a diverse and distinguished group of dance luminaries on one of the most prestigious dance stages in New York City, The Joyce Theater. Returning for its third year, the competition has an impressive list of acclaimed judges and awards. The Finale performance will take place on May 16 at The Joyce Theater, 175 Eighth Avenue, New York City.
